General Information............................................................................

Abacus Tubes Ltd. is one of the leading stockholders of bright annealed general engineering copper coil in the UK. Complying to all the major international specifications including ASTM, JIS, SIS and European Standards in CU-DHP, SF-CU and CW024. With a comprehensive stock covering all the popular sizes from 1/8” & 4mm OD at the lower end of the range up to 3/4“ & 15mm OD, Abacus Tubes offers an excellent range of 10, 20 and 30Mtr coils.

These tubes are manufactured with an outside diameter tolerance of +0.0/-0.08mm (0.003”), annealed at approximately 600°C, giving a hardness range of 45/60 HV5.

Uses include hot & cold water services, refrigeration, air conditioning, sanitation, medical & industrial functions involving oil, common gases & liquids, including automotive and refinery applications.

Abacus Tubes can quickly provide customers with price, availability, technical information and immediate dispatch including dedicated labelling if required.

Abacus coils can be hand straightened or bent as required using standard bending springs or hand-held benders of the correct size.
The jointing of the tubes is by the traditional methods of compression type fittings or soldered ends. It is recommended that the tube be re-rounded prior to jointing and that the fittings manufacturer’s instructions be adhered to.
For more aggressive environments, copper tube with a PVC or LDPE sheath may be an effective method of protection against attack.
The PVC or LDPE is tightly extruded onto the tube and is available in black, white, green, blue and yellow according to customer requirements.
As an alternative sheath, where conditions require, low-smoke, flame-retardant material can also be offered.

Bursting Pressures............................................................................

Subjecting tube to internal hydraulic pressures will result in stress half as much longitudinally as it is circumferentially. Hydraulic failure, therefore, usually takes the form of a longitudinal fracture, i.e. at right angles to the stress.

Bursting pressures of heavy duty tubes are difficult to calculate. However, in the case of lighter and thinner wall tubes, a figure for bursting pressure can be derived from a formula utilising the relationship between circumferential or hoop stress to the dimensions of the tube, as in:

Pressure =
2 x Hoop Stress x Thickness

Bore + Thickness

By inserting the UTS value for the tube into this formula, the approximate bursting pressure can be calculated.
